Clinical Supervision: Principles and Practices (6 CE)

Online Video Streaming Course including PowerPoint presentation and video clips.

Effective clinical supervision plays a vital role in therapist development and positive client outcomes. More than case discussion alone, effective supervision intentionally develops therapist competence through structured observation, deliberate practice, timely feedback, and reflective learning. This workshop provides supervisors with practical, evidence-informed strategies for developing supervisee competence, confidence, clinical judgment, and therapeutic effectiveness. Participants will begin by distinguishing mental health supervision from related professional activities, such as consultation, mentoring, and case discussion.

Drawing on Scott Miller's research, participants will be introduced to deliberate practice as a framework for developing clinical expertise, with advanced applications explored in subsequent workshops. Participants will examine the characteristics of highly effective supervisees, evidence-based methods for teaching and evaluating clinical skills, and the developmental process through which therapists acquire professional competence.

The workshop will examine the stages of development of both supervisees and supervisors and consider how supervisory strategies evolve as competence, confidence, and professional autonomy increase. Through supervision models, case reviews, transcript analysis, and theory-informed supervision strategies, participants will learn practical techniques for enhancing clinical performance while fostering reflective practice and professional growth.

Throughout the workshop, participants will critically evaluate their own supervisory practices and leave with practical, evidence-informed tools that can be immediately integrated into supervision to strengthen therapist development, enhance supervisory effectiveness, and ultimately improve client care.
