The experience of humor is far more than entertainment—it is also a powerful therapeutic resource. Rather than viewing humor as casual playfulness or spontaneous amusement, participants will learn to understand therapeutic humor as a purposeful clinical intervention that advances specific therapeutic goals.

While emphasizing the theoretical and scientific foundations of therapeutic humor, the workshop introduces practical clinical applications that prepare participants for more advanced training. Participants learn how therapeutic humor functions as an intentional, evidence-based clinical intervention that strengthens each of these therapeutic capacities.

Blending the science and playfulness of humor, this workshop explores the theory, research, and clinical rationale that make humor a powerful therapeutic tool for enhancing emotional well-being, cognitive flexibility, interpersonal connection, and resilience.

The workshop examines the research supporting therapeutic humor while presenting practical strategies for integrating humor intentionally, ethically, and effectively into psychotherapy across diverse clinical settings. Case examples and video demonstrations illustrate how humor can strengthen the therapeutic alliance, foster insight, and promote psychological flexibility.

Therapeutic humor is presented as activating three primary domains through which therapeutic benefits are generated—laughter (physical), mirth (emotional), and wit (cognitive)—demonstrating each domain's unique contribution to psychological functioning.

Participants will gain an understanding of the physiological effects of laughter, the emotional experience of mirth, and the cognitive processes involved in wit. The workshop also explores the universal ticklers that help explain what people find funny and the psychological mechanisms that evoke the experience of humor. Participants will examine how individual differences influence when and how humor is most effectively used in psychotherapy.

Through environmental observations and video demonstrations—including the Pope's reflections on humor, classic Candid Camera clips, and memorable film excerpts—participants will discover why people find different things amusing, how those differences inform clinical practice, and how to recognize naturally occurring opportunities to incorporate therapeutic humor into treatment.

The workshop also provides practical guidance for developing confidence in using therapeutic humor, adapting interventions to individual clients, recognizing when humor is not well received, and responding with cultural sensitivity, sound clinical judgment, and ethical practice.

Grounded in more than four decades of clinical experience and supported by contemporary research, this introductory workshop provides a comprehensive framework for understanding humor as a deliberate therapeutic intervention.

Participants will leave with a conceptual framework for understanding therapeutic humor, greater confidence in evaluating the clinical use of humor, and practical strategies for strengthening the therapeutic alliance, enhancing clinical effectiveness, and promoting resilience and psychological well-being.

The workshop also establishes the conceptual foundation for subsequent workshops that explore advanced clinical applications of therapeutic humor.
