Clinical Supervision: Traditional and Contemporary Issues and Processes (6 CE)

Online Video Streaming Course including PowerPoint presentation and video clips.

Clinical supervision has evolved from the traditional model in which supervisees presented case material and supervisors primarily offered guidance and treatment recommendations. Today's supervision is a dynamic, multifaceted process that extends well beyond case consultation to encompass therapist development, competency-based training, ethical decision-making, and professional growth.

Participants will examine how the supervisory relationship evolves as supervisees acquire competence, confidence, and professional autonomy while exploring the developmental stages and supervisory dynamics that characterize effective supervision. While supervision can address supervisee personal issues that affect working with clients, the workshop distinguishes supervision from psychotherapy and examines the unique knowledge and skills required to foster supervisee competence, clinical judgment, and professional growth.

Participants will identify clinical and personal biases, recognize common blind spots that influence supervisory decision-making, and examine how deliberate practice and competency-based training accelerate clinical skill development. Contemporary professional, legal, ethical, and technological issues are integrated throughout the workshop, providing practical strategies for navigating the evolving complexities of modern clinical supervision.

Throughout the workshop, participants will critically evaluate their own supervisory practices and leave with practical, evidence-based tools that strengthen therapist development, enhance supervisory effectiveness, and ultimately improve client care.
